Leading health communication scholar and UNC Hussman Professor Seth Noar was named an ICA Fellow at the recent 2023 International Communication Association Conference in Toronto May 25-29, 2023. The honor recognizes distinguished scholarly achievement and contributions to the broad field of communication.

Ten graduate students, eight faculty members, Dean Raul Reis, one staff member and various alumni will represent the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media May 25-29 at the 73rd annual International Communication Association Conference, held in Toronto. These scholars will participate in panel sessions and present authored or co-authored papers.

The Bloomberg 2023 Journalism Diversity Program is pleased to introduce this year’s cohort, a group of 24 students, representing 18 universities in the United States. The program, in partnership with the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media and UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, will be held May 15-19, 2023, in-person at Bloomberg’s headquarters in New York City for students studying in the United States. All expenses for participating students will be covered by Bloomberg.

Three UNC-Chapel Hill faculty members received the 2023 Faculty Awards for Global Excellence in a ceremony at the FedEx Global Education Center on May 2. The annual awards, administered by the Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs (OVPGA), recognize faculty contributions to advancing the University’s global vision articulated in Carolina Next: Innovations for Public Good. Gina Chowa, Robert Jenkins and Tori Smith Ekstrand were selected from nearly 40 nominees.

Among the more than 400 talented students to cross the stage during the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media’s commencement ceremony on May 13, six students will carry the distinction of having been selected as the Class of 2023’s most outstanding graduates in their respective programs. Prior to spring commencement each year, UNC Hussman faculty select top students to honor as the most outstanding graduates in the school’s undergraduate programs in journalism and advertising/public relations along with its online master’s, residential master’s and doctoral programs.

In mid-May, Kate Slate (MA ‘23) will graduate with a master’s degree from the Hussman School of Journalism and Media and start her career working at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy — the result of interdisciplinary coursework and supportive faculty.

Abby Young had always dreamed of graduating from Carolina. But there was a time when she wasn’t sure she’d be able to graduate high school on schedule, much less go to college. During her sophomore year of high school, Young was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. “When I was diagnosed, I thought, ‘I’m not going to let this change who I am or stop me from doing anything I want to do,’” she recalled. “Three days before I was getting my surgery, I had to go to a pre-surgery consultation, and I had a chemistry test the next day. I was sitting there in the consultation with my binder, studying for my test because it was my dream to get into Carolina, and I was not going to let it stop me.” Cancer didn’t force Young to change her plans.
