During a wide-ranging discussion covering topics from salary negotiation to freelancing as students, alumnae Giulia Heyward ’21 (M.A.) and Ruth Samuel ’21  doled out career advice during a recent virtual event held by the Carolina Association of Black Journalists (CABJ).

Seven graduate students, three faculty members and various alumni will represent the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media on March 2-4, 2023, at the 48th annual AEJMC Southeast Colloquium, held at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. These scholars will participate in panel sessions and present authored or co-authored papers.

The ABIDE (Access, Belonging, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity) committee at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media recently announced the recipients of its 2023 grants, which will fund a host of diverse projects and activities for the school’s faculty, students and staff.

Three UNC Hussman professors were honored by the Morehead-Cain Foundation for the role they’ve played in the journey of Morehead-Cain Scholars at the school. Professor of the Practice Jules Dixon, Teaching Assistant Professor John Robinson and Associate Professor Ryan Thornburg were nominated by graduating Morehead-Cain Scholars Cullen Duval ’23, Kate Carroll ’23 and Jacob Turner ’23, respectively, for the positive impact they’ve made on the students during their time at UNC.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will celebrate Black History Month with events including lectures, performances and exhibitions throughout February. The inaugural Dr. Genna Rae McNeil Endowed Black History Month lecture will highlight this year’s events. Vincent Brown, the Charles Warren Professor of American History and interim director of the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University, will be the keynote speaker at the lecture on Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m.

A Tar Heel legend on the field hockey turf will follow a Tar Heel legend on the sidelines. Erin Matson '22, the most decorated player in program history, has been named North Carolina’s next head field hockey coach after a national search. She follows Karen Shelton, the winningest coach in the sport’s history, who announced her retirement in December after 42 years at the Carolina helm
