From Sports Xtra to the sports broadcasting field

Students in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media’s Sports Xtra class are putting their academics into practice and learning by doing. In Sports Xtra — an Emmy-award-winning broadcast class — students create content for a twice-weekly sports show that is broadcast on Facebook and YouTube. With students working in editorial, field production and studio production positions, the Tar Heels behind Sports Xtra produce highlights, analysis and commentary while gaining professional development experience that prepares them for careers after Carolina.

Recently, the UNC Kenan–Flagler Business School featured UNC Hussman alumna Stephanie Mahin '17 (Ph.D.) in an article about her work as a faculty member at UNC Kenan-Flagler and her research focusing on he ways organizations use social media to engage with a range of stakeholders. The article also mentions her work with Hussman Associate Professor Victoria Smith Ekstrand examining how #BlackLivesMatter trademark applications are treated.

Recently, UNC's History Department, the UNC Institute for the Arts and Humanities and the The Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life (CITAP) convened a panel to discuss the implications of ChatGPT in higher education. Heesoo Jang, a Ph.D. student at UNC Hussman, was among the four panel members who discussed this new technology and its impacts on the campus community.

More than half of the Tar Heels enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill today are women, but that hasn’t always been the case. It wasn’t until 1877 that women first began enrolling at the University for summer sessions. Another two decades passed before Sallie Walker Stockard became the first woman to receive a degree from Carolina. This Women's History Month piece from University Communications takes a look at how women’s history progressed at Carolina, from Sallie Marks, who was hired as the University's first female faculty member in 1927, to Susan Grey Akers, who became the University's first woman dean in 1942.
