Funding

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media undergraduate majors who have been admitted to the school are eligible to apply for funding for a range of purposes, including:

  • Extracurricular activities
  • Immersive experiences
  • Academic-year scholarships 
  • Internships
  • Travel for academic programs

Extracurricular Activities

 

Extracurricular activity funds may be used for conferences, workshops and other journalism- and media-related activities.  Funds cannot be used for class-related purposes. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis — August through March — during the academic year

Please submit your application at least six weeks before the activity payment date. Applications submitted within six weeks of the payment date will be considered but the award might not be awarded before the payment due date.

How are extracurricular activity funds distributed? Funds will be deposited in your UNC student account.

Immersive experiences

Immersive experience funds encourage students to "learn by doing."  Funds support a variety of activities and encourage students to think creatively about how such funding may support a unique experience. Please note: Graduating seniors are not eligible to apply except for the John Sweeney Interview Award.

How are immersive experience funds distributed? Funds are transferred to the student's UNC account. Funds must be reported by UNC Hussman to the UNC Office of Scholarships and Student Aid and may affect the student's financial aid. Funds may have tax implications.
 

Immersive experience funds | Apply Jan. 10 - Feb. 9   +

Applications will become available on Jan. 10, 2024, for UNC Hussman students. Please note that UNC Hussman scholarships and awards are only available to full-time students who have been officially admitted into the Hussman School of Journalism and Media. You will receive an email from UNC Slate with 2 application links—one to apply for apply for general UNC Hussman scholarships and another link to apply for internship and immersive awards.You may be considered for more than one scholarship or award!

 

Upon completion of the UNC Hussman scholarship application, you will receive a notice that your application was submitted.
 
The deadline to apply for scholarships and awards is Feb. 9, 2024.  All applicants will be notified by April 1 of their selection status.

Scholarships for the academic year

UNC Hussman awards scholarships to undergraduate majors each spring for the following academic year.  Graduating seniors are not eligible to apply. Please follow directions for applying through the scholarship application (linked below). All recipients will be notified by April.

How are academic-year scholarship funds distributed? Scholarships awarded for the following academic year are transferred to the student's UNC account at the start of the fall and spring semesters. All scholarships must be reported by UNC Hussman to the UNC Office of Scholarships and Student Aid and may affect the student's financial aid. Funds may have tax implications.

Travel for academic programs

Partial funding is available for MEJO 437: Media in Asia, MEJO 447: Media in the UK, MEJO 488: Carolina Photojournalism Workshop, MEJO 584: International Projects and Hussman School study abroad programs. Students interested in these programs will be notified how to apply.

How are travel funds distributed? Scholarships are transferred to the student's UNC account at the start of the fall, spring or summer terms, depending on when the courses are held. UNC Hussman works with the UNC Office of Scholarships and Student Aid to verify financial need.  Funding from the Hussman School may affect the student's financial aid. Funding may have tax implications.
