J-school senior takes first in Hearst TV category

Landon Dowdy, a senior broadcast and electronic journalism student, won first place in the second and final 2013-14 Hearst Journalism Awards television broadcast news competition.

“Heart of the High Country,” a UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication student project that tells the stories of people in the N.C. mountains, won the 2014 South by Southwest Interactive award in the student category.

Biz journalism senior wins SABEW student contest

Caitlin McCabe, a senior business journalism major from Winston-Salem, N.C., is the 2013 student business journalism winner in the annual Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) Best in Business contest.

Her win marks the eighth time in the past 10 years that a UNC business journalism student has won the student award. This year, there were 39 student entries.

J-school seniors place in Hearst multimedia competition

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media seniors Carolyn Van Houten and Karla Towle placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the news category of the Hearst Journalism Awards multimedia competition. 

Van Houten will receive a $1,000 award for her entry “Exonerated: Learning to Live Again,” which was produced in August 2013 for the Chicago Tribune.

UNC students recognized in 2014 WHNPA ‘Eyes of History’ contest

Jon Kasbe, a 2013 graduate, was named student video photographer of the year and senior Carolyn Van Houten won an award of excellence in the still photography category of the 2014 White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA) “Eyes of History” student contest.

Kasbe’s video photography win marks the first time WHNPA has given an award in the category.

J-school photojournalist places in Hearst competition

UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication visual communication student Carolyn Van Houten placed fourth in the photojournalism competition’s news and features category of the Hearst Journalism Awards.

For the fourth year, UNC J-school students partnered with FOX Sports as part of its FOX Sports University program.
