J-school seniors place in Hearst multimedia competition

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media seniors Carolyn Van Houten and Karla Towle placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the news category of the Hearst Journalism Awards multimedia competition.
Van Houten will receive a $1,000 award for her entry “Exonerated: Learning to Live Again,” which was produced in August 2013 for the Chicago Tribune.
Towle will receive a certificate for “High Country Crystal,” which was created as part of “Heart of the High Country” — a multimedia website produced during the 2013 Carolina Photojournalism Workshop.
Their work was chosen from 45 entries from 27 different universities.
The school is in second place of the 2013-14 Hearst multimedia competition after this second category.
The school finished second overall — and first in broadcast — in the 2012-13 Intercollegiate Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards.
