Biz journalism senior wins SABEW student contest

Caitlin McCabe, a senior business journalism major from Winston-Salem, N.C., is the 2013 student business journalism winner in the annual Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) Best in Business contest.
Her win marks the eighth time in the past 10 years that a UNC business journalism student has won the student award. This year, there were 39 student entries.
McCabe won in the professional publication category for a story she wrote last summer while interning for the Charlotte Observer business news desk as a Van Hecke Award winner. The story was about how thousands of people in the state are stuck in a backlog at the state’s unemployment office, waiting on requests for benefits.
McCabe will intern this summer at Bloomberg News in New York. This past year, she was a Reporter of the Year Finalist from Associated Collegiate Press.
