Remembering Raleigh Mann: 1934–2022

Raleigh Colston Mann, retired from the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media, died May 19, 2022. He was 87 years old.

A native of Baltimore, Raleigh was born on August 21, 1934, the third and youngest child of John and Elizabeth Mann. He was a graduate of the University of South Florida and worked for the Fort Lauderdale News and Miami Herald.

He taught news writing and news editing at the school from 1978 until his retirement in 2000. He was the faculty adviser of the student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and a member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication; the Society of Professional Journalists; and the American Copy Editors’ Society, now ACES: The Society for Editing.

Active in music and amateur theater, Raleigh was at various times a member of the Choral Society of Durham; the Durham Savoyards; Voices; the Carolina Blue barbershop quartet and the General Assembly barbershop chorus; the United Voices of Praise gospel choir; and the Ambassadors dance band.

He died at the SECU Jim and Betsy Bryan Hospice House in Pittsboro, North Carolina.

Raleigh was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Jack Mann. He is survived by his bride, Betsy; three daughters, Katie (Chris) Porier; Beth (Mark) Woodard; and Evelyn (Chris) Cummo; six grandchildren; his sister, Peggy Copenhaver; his cousin, Lynn Patton; and nieces and nephews.
