2024 Society for News Design International Student Competition Awards
Once again, UNC Hussman students led the way in the Society for News Design International Student Competition.
This is now the 14th consecutive year UNC Hussman students have won the most awards; however, the competition is starting to heat up as we were tied for the most awards (14) with Ohio University this year.
Betsy Porter ’26, who brought home three awards, went from drawing simple shapes in Adobe Illustrator to creating incredible informational visuals in “MEJO 484: Information Graphics,” taught by Walter Spearman Distinguished Professor Terence Oliver.
“When Professor Oliver initially showed us infographics from previous classes, I was intimidated by the amount of intricate detail used,” Porter said. “This class truly reinvigorated my passion for design and my confidence that I can be successful.”
Ten awards were produced in our classes and three were produced in the DTH newsroom.
By the numbers:
9 awards came from students in "MEJO 484: Information Graphics" (taught by Terence Oliver)
1 award came from a student in "MEJO 482: Media Design" (taught by Grayson Mendenhall)
3 awards came from students working at The Daily Tar Heel
