For media law professor, MATC course recalls professional roots

Tori Ekstrand will teach her first UNC Master of Arts in Technology and Communication course next semester, but she is quite comfortable—and experienced—leading professional communicators and online learners.

Ekstrand, an assistant professor in the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media and former director of corporate communications for The Associated Press, will teach JOMC 718: “Media Law for the Digital Age” for second-year MATC students.

User testing: you can do it, too!

MATC students in Fall 2 are conducting user tests right now in JOMC 721: Usability and Multimedia Design. Four weeks of this course are dedicated to usability and producing a usability study. Many students do this study on their own employer’s site, just one example of how the MATC can bring value to your professional career and build your subject matter expertise and credibility at work.

What we learned at NC's technology and creativity conference

The MATC team joined ConvergeSouth, a regional conference for techies and creatives, this year as it celebrated ten years running. Friday, October 17 was jam-packed with networking and break-out sessions on technology, creativity, design, marketing, and Web.

Five reasons communicators need the UNC MATC

1. Engage with like-minded and driven peers.

The MATC admits small groups of talented students who experience the program together. Students interact with and learn from one another online and in person, fostering camaraderie through a shared desire to retool for digital media. This tight-knit support group is a professional asset and adds depth to the learning process.

Class of 2016-2017 starts fall classes

The M.A. in Technology and Communication welcomed its fourth cohort of students with orientation Aug. 11-12. While on campus, students got to know each other as well as MATC faculty, administrators and alumni. A panel of MATC alumni shared how they dealt with home/work responsibilities during the program, which served as great preparation for starting graduate school. MATC students began online coursework Aug. 19.

A note from outgoing MATC academic director

By Rhonda Gibson

I believe it’s time for a change!  After almost five years as the academic director of the MATC program, I’m leaving my administrative role and joining the program’s esteemed faculty.
