Ph.D. Program: Alumni

 

Graduates of our doctoral program are at leading research universities, teaching colleges and innovative firms across the nation and the world. UNC Hussman doctoral program alumni serve in leadership positions at universities across the country, including as deans at Michigan State and West Virgina universities. Our recent graduates are tenure-track professors at schools such as Arizona State, Syracuse and Indiana universities, and the universities of Oregon and Missouri. Others have gone on to postdoctoral fellowships with the National Institutes of Health, Harvard University, the University of Oxford and other institutions. The Carolina bond and network are strong, with doctoral alumni connecting annually through social events at conferences such as AEJMC and ICA.

Meredith Clark '14

Dr. Clark is an associate professor in the College of Arts, Media and Design and the founding director of the Center for Communication, Media Innovation and Social Change at Northeastern University. She previously taught at the University of Virginia and the University of North Texas and was a faculty fellow with the Data & Society Research Institute. A former journalist, Dr. Clark researches intersections of race, media and power. She is widely known for her expertise on Black Twitter, the subject of both her award-winning dissertation and a book in progress.

Woodrow Hartzog '11

Dr. Hartzog is a professor at Northeastern University's School of Law and College of Computer and Information Science and an affiliate scholar at Stanford Law School’s Center for Internet and Society. An internationally recognized expert in privacy, media and robotics law, he has written extensively on the subject for law and academic journals, and in opinion pieces for major newspapers and other media outlets. Dr. Hartzog was one of two 2021 honorees for Northeastern's Excellence in Research and Creative Activity award. His second book is due out in 2022.

Chioma Ihekweazu '17

Dr. Ihekweazu is a research scientist at Battelle Memorial Institute, where she conducts health communication and health behavior research. She is involved in primary data collection, data analysis and manuscript development for these projects. Her work involves a mix of grant- and contract-funded research. She also serves as a contributor to Health News Review, a health news watchdog organization, where she reviews the quality of health news stories in the popular press.


Brooke McKeever '11

An associate professor and coordinator of the Master of Mass Communication program at the University of South Carolina, Dr. McKeever researches health communication and nonprofit public relations with a focus on advocacy, fundraising and information that helps mobilize publics to improve health and social conditions. She was named the 2017 educator of the year by the South Carolina chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.
