J-school photojournalist places in Hearst competition

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media visual communication student Carolyn Van Houten placed fourth in the photojournalism competition’s news and features category of the Hearst Journalism Awards.
Carolyn Van Houten, a senior from Greenville, N.C., will receive a $1,000 award.
Her photo was selected from a record 108 entries from students at 59 different schools.
Van Houten will submit additional images for a semi-final round of judging in April. Six finalists will be chosen to compete in the program’s national championship to be held in Washington, D.C. in June.
Other J-school students placing in the 2013-14 Hearst Journalism Awards Program include Charlie Shelton and James Kaminsky, who placed fourth and eighth, respectively, in the radio news and features competition.
