UNC wins CPOY group multimedia for 6th straight year

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media students won 10 awards in the 69th College Photographer of the Year competition, including a gold medal in the large group multimedia category — a category UNC has topped every year since its creation six years ago.
Powering a Nation, the school’s award-winning multimedia project that investigates energy issues in the U.S., received the top honors in large group multimedia for “Whole Hog,” a special edition that covers the energy dynamics within North Carolina’s hog industry.
Judges commented on the complexity of “Whole Hog” and the tastefulness of its execution. One judge said, “It brings animations that explains things, brings in statistics, brings in multiple data, and it really uses a lot of different forms of storytelling, and each of them is done to a very good level.” Another judge noted that “any professional publication would be proud to publish this.”
“Edge of Sound,” a collection of narratives from the lowlands along the southwestern edge of North Carolina's Albemarle Sound created during the annual Carolina Photojournalism Workshop, won silver in large group multimedia. Judges commented on the strong storytelling and the depth of the characters presented.
The two group projects and work by six students, who accounted for eight awards, were chosen from nearly 11,000 still images and 168 multimedia projects entered by 545 student photographers from 99 colleges and universities in 18 countries.
