UNC students dominate CPOY multimedia categories
UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media students won 15 of 19 multimedia awards given in the 67th College Photographer of the Year (CPOY) competition and swept the large group multimedia category. The school's Powering a Nation won gold for the fourth consecutive year with "100 Gallons."
"The Undocumentary: Documenting the Undocumented" – produced by 2012 master's graduate Josh Davis for his thesis – won silver in the large group multimedia project category. Carolina Photojournalism's "Living Galapagos" and "Port City Stories" earned bronze and an award of excellence, respectively, in the category.
May 2012 graduate Ariana van den Akker took gold in the solo journalist multimedia story or essay category for a story produced for The Los Angeles Times. Carolina journalism students nearly swept that category, winning four of the five awards.
Senior Kathryn Carlson won gold in the individual multimedia story or essay category for "The Girl in Heels," produced for "Living Galapagos."
Entries were judged Nov. 8 through Nov. 14, at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo.
