UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media alumna Rachel McMahan '17 (M.A.) is the first-ever graduate of the UNC Environment and Science Communication dual-degree program — a path that enabled her to receive a bachelor's degree in environmental studies and a master's degree in mass communication in just five years.

With a passion for renewable energy and doing meaningful work to mitigate climate change, the North Carolina native now works in Oakland, California, as a workforce development and volunteerism SolarCorps fellow for GRID Alternatives, the nation’s largest nonprofit solar installer.
