Registration open for J-school and NCSMA summer workshops for high school students

The N.C. Scholastic Media Association (NCSMA) and the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media will host three journalism workshops for high school students – the N.C. Scholastic Media Institute, the Carolina Sports Journalism Camp and the Chuck Stone Program for Diversity in Education and Media – during summer 2013. Registration is open for all three.
N.C. Scholastic Media Institute, June 17-20
The North Carolina Scholastic Media Institute will be June 17-20 at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media. High school journalism students and advisers are invited to enroll. This intensive four-day workshop teaches innovative and effective ways of communicating through scholastic media. Instructors from across the state and nation offer their expertise in online news, newspaper, yearbook, literary magazine, photojournalism, design and TV news. Chuck Stone Program, July 7-12
The Chuck Stone Program for Diversity in Education and Media invites rising high school seniors with a career interest in journalism to apply for the summer 2013 workshop, held at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media July 7-12. The Chuck Stone Program welcomes students of varying diversity, including but not limited to religion, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and gender. The 12 students accepted to the one-week program will learn from classroom study, real-world reporting, newsroom practice and professional mentors. Paid expenses include airfare, meals and lodging. Carolina Sports Journalism Camp, July 14-17
Rising high school juniors and seniors interested in sports and media are encouraged to apply to the Carolina Sports Journalism Camp, held at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media July 14-17. The four-day workshop will instruct students on sports play-by-play, sports writing, sports photography and more through classroom study and newsroom practice. Students will take a behind-the-scenes tour of UNC’s sports media facilities and cover a press conference. They will also observe an undergraduate sports writing class taught by Sports Camp lead instructor Tim Crothers, whose work has appeared in New York Times Magazine and ESPN Magazine. Priority deadline for applications is April 1. The fee of $500 for in-state students and $750 for out-of-state students covers lodging, instruction and meals.
