Photojournalism senior qualifies for Hearst national championship multimedia competition

Kathryn Carlson, a senior photojournalism major from Winston-Salem, N.C., placed third in the narrative multimedia storytelling features category of the Hearst Journalism Awards. 

Carlson’s entry — “The Girl in Heels” produced for “Living Galapagos” — was selected from among 77 entries submitted by students from 45 universities. For the third-place win, Carlson will receive a $1,500 award. 

Because the first- and second-place finishers in the competition graduated in May 2012, she also qualifies to compete in the Hearst multimedia national championship to be held in San Francisco in June. The national championships gather monthly competition winners from broadcast, writing, photojournalism and multimedia disciplines to demonstrate their skills in on-the-spot assignments to compete for additional awards.

Carlson also won a gold medal in the individual multimedia story or essay category of the 67th College Photographer of the Year (COPY) competition for “The Girl in Heels” in November 2012.

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media finished third overall in the Intercollegiate Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards during the 2011-12 academic year. Before that, the school won back-to-back Hearst overall national championships. 

The overall finishes result from students placing in monthly writing, photojournalism, broadcast and multimedia competitions during the school year.
