J-school partnership with CBC promotes industry diversity

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media and Capitol Broadcasting Company’s WRAL-TV are working together to help increase diversity in the broadcasting industry.
The CBC-UNC Diversity Fellowship Program, which begins in spring 2013, is a fellowship program for 10-15 graduating college seniors or graduate students finishing their programs who are pursuing broadcast careers as reporters, videographers, editors, producers or directors.
The intensive workshop, which is open to students at any college or university, is designed to help fellows land a first job and be prepared to advance in the industry. Fellows will receive funding to offset travel and accommodation expenses.
“This is an unparalleled opportunity for students looking to get their break in the broadcast industry,” said Susan King, dean of UNC’s journalism school. “WRAL-TV is highly regarded industry-wide, and we’re honored to partner with them to bring greater diversity to that industry.”
WRAL-TV professionals and UNC journalism faculty members will lead the workshop at the WRAL-TV studios in Raleigh, N.C., and on the UNC campus. Fellows will receive hands-on training and will produce reports and newscasts at state-of-the-art facilities to create clips for professional resume reels.
“The broadcasting industry should reflect the diverse makeup of the populations we serve," says WRAL-TV vice president and general manager Steven D. Hammel. "It is a pleasure to partner with the award-winning UNC journalism school. The University's commitment to diversity and training future broadcasters in excellence is a match with our values as a company. Our mission together is to attract students from all nationalities and cultures to learn our craft in front of and behind the cameras."
