J-school awards more than $300k at annual scholarships and awards ceremony

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media presented top students, faculty and staff members with more than 100 scholarships and awards totaling more than $300,000 at its annual honors ceremony on April 22.

Associate professor Napoleon Byars, who teaches courses in public relations, received the 2013 Edward Vick Prize for Innovation in Teaching.

Heidi Hennink-Kaminski, an associate professor who teaches courses in marketing and public relations and oversees the school's master's program, was awarded the David Brinkley Teaching Excellence Award.  

Jennifer Gallina, the Hussman School's director of research development and foundation relations, received the Staff Excellence Award. Assistant to the dean for communications Kyle York was recognized with the Star Heel Award. 

Outstanding graduating seniors in each specialization were recognized as were outstanding graduate students.
