Hussman School students travel to 14 cities, 3 continents in 2017-18
The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media made its presence felt around the globe in 2017-18, providing travel opportunities for domestic and international trips for hundreds of students.
From trips to Puerto Rico to cover the post-hurricane aftermath to immersive experiences across Europe and Asia, students traveled to 14 countries across three different continents in 2017-18 — reporting on local news, learning about international media markets and networking with alumni. The Hussman School is proud to provide these opportunities to help students become global leaders in their chosen fields.

International travel
San Juan, Puerto Rico | "MEJO 625: Media Hub"
Nov. 2-6, 2017
Four students traveled to Puerto Rico to cover life after Hurricane Maria, which devastated the island in September 2017. Their stories focused on the country's post-hurricane economic struggles, its wild animal crisis and the splintering of families in the aftermath of the hurricane.
San Juan, Puerto Rico | "MEJO 584: Documentary Multimedia Storytelling"
March 8-17, 2018
During UNC's spring break, 25 students traveled to Puerto Rico to create a multimedia documentary website — Aftermath: Puerto Ricans Rebuild After Maria — that explores Puerto Rico's changing environmental landscape and the ongoing public health ramifications caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The trip was led by Professor Pat Davison and adjunct faculty members Christa Gala and Tamara Rice.

London | "MEJO 447: International Media Studies"
March 9-17, 2018
James H. Shumaker Term Associate professor Rhonda Gibson led 18 students from her class to London during UNC's spring break to visit companies such as Google, Bloomberg, BBC World Service, APCO Worldwide, The Guardian, The Economist and Wunderman to learn about how the U.K. media market differs from the U.S. market and how these companies were preparing for Brexit.

Milan and Florence, Italy | "MEJO 651: Workroom FashionMash Product Design"
March 9-19, 2018
During UNC's spring break, six students from the Workroom FashionMash program traveled to Italy to study fashion media, branding, design and production. The trip was led by Professor of the Practice Dana McMahan, who introduced her students to industry leaders from companies such as Cartier, Gucci and Ssheena in Milan and Florence.

Mexico City | Eugene L. Roberts Prize
March 13-17, 2018
Under the auspices of the Eugene L. Roberts Prize, student journalists Anne Marie Hagerty '18 and Kiana Cole '18 went to Nezahualcóyotl, a suburb outside of Mexico City, to report on Sam Gomez Olvera's family in Mexico. A student at Carolina studying computer science, Gomez Olvera is a "dreamer" protected by Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), but now he fears deportation because of the Trump administration's intention to terminate DACA. Hagerty and Cole focused on the life of Gomez Olvera's Mexican family and the cultural differences between the United States and Mexico.

China | MEJO 490: International Media Markets, China
May 13-25, 2018
This short-term global immersion, a section of "MEJO 490: Special Topics in Mass Communication," brought 14 students from the Hussman School to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong to explore the Chinese media market. The trip was led by Assistant Professor Joe Cabosky. Before the trip, the class studied issues surrounding Chinese media, culture and political life. While in China, students toured many companies, including APCO Worldwide, The Paper, Wunderman and South China Morning Post.

Europe | Honors Carolina Burch Field Research Seminar
May 19 - June 30, 2018
Bridget Williams '20 and Sarah Barr '20 traveled to Europe to study the environment and storytelling in Germany, Spain and Denmark. The students spent 10 days in Pamplona where the school has a longstanding partnership with the University of Navarra. The trip, co-led by Glaxo Wellcome Distinguished Professor Tom Linden, was funded through the Burch Field Research Seminar, a six-week Honors Carolina summer study abroad program.

Asia | 2018 Robin Clark Experience
Summer 2018
Alexis Allston '19 traveled to four countries in Asia — China, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore — to research social media usage among young people. The trip was funded through the Robin Clark Experience, an award presented by the Hussman School.

California, France, Portugal | 2018 Chuck Stone Citizen of the World
Summer 2018
Micah Stubbs '18 traveled to three locations — Napa, California, France and Portugal — to make a documentary about wine. The trip was funded through the Chuck Stone Citizen of the World Award, given to a Hussman School undergraduate student annually to support a travel-related project or study.

Brussels, Belgium | 2018 William G. Arey, Jr. International Communications Scholarship
Summer 2018
Sean Kurz '19 spent the summer interning at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium. The trip was funded through the William G. Arey, Jr. International Communications Scholarship, awarded annually by the Hussman School to an undergraduate student whose career goals are to cover international, political and economic events or work in the field of public diplomacy.

Washington, D.C. | Washington Experience
Sept. 15-16, 2017
A new section of "MEJO 490: Special Topics in Mass Communication" led by associate professor Daniel Kreiss, the Washington Experience introduces a total of 20 undergraduate and graduate students to the people, organizations, issues and opportunities of political communication in the United States. On their first trip, students met with Katie Harbath at Facebook; Chris Wallace at Fox News; and alumna Christina Reynolds '97 of Global Strategy Group.

Raleigh, North Carolina | 2017 networking trip
Sept. 22, 2017
Students met with Hussman School alumni working at APCO Worldwide, French|West|Vaughan and Red Hat. The Friday trip was a great opportunity for students to network in a local media hub without missing time in the classroom.

The Washington Experience's second trip gave the students time for four more action-packed days in D.C., where they visited the offices of Sen. Richard Burr and Rep. David Price and spent time with alumni at Google, Buzzfeed, Politico, the National Democratic Institute, The Washington Post, Bloomberg and Burson, Cohn & Wolfe.

New York City | 2017 Fall Break networking trip
Oct. 19-21, 2017
During UNC's fall break, 22 students traveled to New York City to meet with Hussman School grads working at CBS News, Edelman, Major League Soccer (MLS), The New York Times, Ogilvy & Mather, People and more. Students also gained networking experience with local Hussman School graduates and friends of the school at the MJ Day — New York City reception.

New York City | "MEJO 650: Workroom FashionMash Experiential Design"
Oct. 19-21, 2017
Twenty students from the Workroom FashionMash program traveled to New York City during UNC's fall break to learn more about presentation and showcase strategies for luxury retailers. The trip was led by Professor of the Practice Dana McMahan, who organized meetings on famed Fifth Avenue with representatives from top brands in the fashion industry.

Seventeen students traveled to the nation's capital to meet with Hussman School alumni working at Axios, Boeing, GMMB, Ketchum, Politico, The Washington Post and more. March 11-14, 2018
During UNC's spring break, 10 students traveled to San Francisco to meet with Hussman School alumni working at Ancestry.com, Bloomberg, Facebook, Mother Jones, POPSUGAR, Ubisoft and YouTube. The students spent time in both San Francisco and Silicon Valley and were led by Director of Career Services Jay Eubank.

Raleigh, North Carolina | 2018 CBC-UNC Diversity Fellowship Program
March 14-18, 2018
In partnership with Capitol Broadcasting Company (CBC) in Raleigh, the Hussman School hosted an intensive hands-on workshop led by WRAL-TV professionals and UNC media and journalism faculty. The CBC-UNC Diversity Fellowship Program, which funds 12 top college seniors or graduate students from across the country, is designed to prepare participants for future broadcast media careers and help increase diversity in the industry. Hussman School participants included Doni Holloway '18, Hannah Lee '18, Lex Juarez '18 and Alexis Bell '18.

San Antonio, Texas | "MEJO 625: Media Hub"
March 29 - April 2, 2018
Two students traveled to San Antonio to meet with Danny Green, a former UNC men's basketball player and current NBA player. Their stories focused on Green's turbulent path to the NBA and his relationship with his pet snake, a Columbian red-tailed boa named Jade.
Cherokee, North Carolina | "MEJO 625: Media Hub"
April 5-6, 2018
Three students traveled to Cherokee, North Carolina, to tell the stories of the threatened culture, language and traditions of those living on the Cherokee reservation. The stories tell how the New Kituwah Academy strives to offer Cherokee language program that teaches children from infants to eighth-graders the threatened language.
Hickory, North Carolina | 2018 Carolina Photojournalism Workshop
May 14-21, 2018
Sixteen students traveled to Hickory, North Carolina, for the annual Carolina Photojournalism Workshop (CPJW), which leads Hussman School students each year to tell stories of towns and cities around North Carolina and produce a documentary website in a week. The trip was led by Julian W. Scheer Term Professor Pat Davison.
